Teaching involves study. The Constitutions place ‘the assiduous study of sacred truth’ among the essential means of achieving the Order’s end. Such devotion to truth gives a specific, particular flavor to the Dominican way of doing things. Humbert of Romans places our study in proper perspective: ‘Study is not the end of our Order, but is extremely necessary to secure its twofold end, namely, preaching and the salvation of souls. For without study neither can be achieved.’ (Father William A. Hinnebusch, O.P.)
